It's a concern I've heard from writers that aren't at the high status level. While a rep might jump at trying to transform one of the young turks or a superstar like Dan Fogelman, they might weigh how much time and payoff in signing a new writer who has those ambitions. It's a lot harder to get a writer into a directors chair and the odds are smaller. And, a writer that just writes will probably make them more money in the short run and take less effort for them. Will I be spending the next 3 years on getting this writer to the directors chair with no payoff when he could have been making money on numerous specs and assignments? That's the theory at least. But, I'm gathering from your answer is that you go in and just lay out your ambitions day one and see if the potential rep has the same vision for you.
