Scott, great post! Watts has a way of making you understand the simplest ideas which relate to Zen and life AND ART. Your understanding of what is needed to make the character come alive made instantly see what I need for my current screenplay. As always, thank you!

Great, Steve, glad to hear it. Concur re Watts. I have The Wisdom of Insecurity on my desk for occasional reference. Good luck with your script!

Indeed, great post. Reminds me of a Sherlock Holmes quote (to Watson), "you see, but you do not observe."

Seems like as good a time as any to pimp Ray Bradbury's "Zen in the Art of Writing." I won't speak for the maestro except to say that there are a lot of "peaches" between the covers of that book. Additionally I will warn you all to take care...major "pitted fruit" recall going on right now...so be sure you're not marveling at listeria along with that juicy peach!

Thanks, Jeff, both for the recommendation and the warning. I've quoted Bradbury several times. Sounds like the book is one I'll have to pick up and read. Thanks again, hope you and your family are well.

Awesome post Scott. Totally agree. I will continue to preach: Writers should live. Experience life. Understand the depths of human emotion. Interact with REAL characters. Explore unfamiliar territory. Try new things. Get outside of your comfort zone. Push yourself to become a better person! Then, when you've done all this, record your thoughts. That's what a writer is -- a recorder of life. But the only way you can accurately record it is if you EXPERIENCE it!
