Thanks Scott, a timely post for me but a great, encouraging reminder for all writers.

what happens to pro writers when they turn in a draft that doesn't work? Does that torpedo their career?....do they try to give the money back? It might be the greatest fear....to work for Steven Spielberg or Joel Silver and hand in a draft that doesn't work.... how embarrassing... Unlike math and physics... the right answer doesn't seem to be as apparent in the real of the creative.

I love Luc Besson. But Lucy doesn't cut it for me. It's extremely expositional (sic). I saw him at Wondercon where he introduced a trailer and the concept. I was blown away. But the movie does not deliver. It's more like a Morgan Freeman narrated episode of Through the Wormhole. Of course if you, as a first time writer, turned in that draft, it would be file 13nd. My suspicion is that the studios (in this case Canal+), insisted on the exposition. Perhaps the exposition is necessary (in some studio execs' little minds perhaps), especially for foreign markets where dialog has to be translated. On the other hand, who needs exposition after watching Leftovers? Anyway, I guess I'm saying, yeah, just get it out there. Someone will F it all up anyway. All that really matters is the concept and the trailer. By the way, it did well in foreign markets. That's all they really care about.
