"To think a talent such as Wilder would not find a home in today’s Hollywood is an incredible statement on the current state of affairs. It’s not an inspiring commentary." I'm a huge basketball fan. NBA TV has a show called "Open Court" where some of the best players of all time (Charles Barkley, Shaq, Reggie Miller, etc.) talk about their playing days. On one episode they all talked about guys they played with growing up that had the talent to be stars in the NBA but never even got past college. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar even cited one of these types of players -- Earl Manigault -- when asked who the greatest player he ever saw was. This type of stuff makes you think. We live in a world, the way society is structured, where luck, circumstances, lots of outside influences in general, often dictate where you end up in life. Obviously the majority of your path is self dependent, but there's no question being in the right place at the right time with the right people can make or break you. Just look at our history... then think of all those nuanced cracks and seeps that prevented some of the great true artists from sifting through the filters while vaulting other less talented performers into the spotlight. Think of how different our lives would have been without Wilder, without PTA, Tarantino or Lynch. These are all guys who did things differently and certainly benefited from being in the right place at the right time, as you allude to Scott. It's crazy to think about all the fallen stars, the ones who had this same type of potential, but for whatever reason failed to break through.
