Thank you Scott for sharing that. What a great story by Wilder. I love stories describing moments that change a person's life, and this certainly sounded like one of those moments. Speaks to the power of storytelling to affect others and effect change in the world. John

John, thanks. I hope you check in on the series each Sunday. Wilder was such an incredible talent and his stories are amazing. Plus big insight into the creative process and life in Hollywood.

In the first anecdote I love the mention of napkin. It’s really small, but it’s there. Sort of unimportant detail, brings certain juices to the story though. I might even argue it’s for the character’s sake. Lol.

I have idolized Billy Wilder for all my life. I even named my dog Billy Wilder. I hope he is as admired today as he was years ago. I don't think any writer/director in the show business of today can measure up to him.

Perfect timing! I'd just come across this http://www.theparisreview.org/interviews/1432/the-art-of-screenwriting-no-1-billy-wilder and hadn't yet jumped into actually reading it so I guess now's as good a time as ever :) Thanks, Scott!

Little details can provide that sense of authenticity as well as atmosphere, or "juice" as you suggest, Roman.

That's great: Naming your dog Billy Wilder! Good for you! Fitting for Wilder who was something of a bulldog as a filmmaker.

Despina, if you Google search my blog, you'll find that interview serialized with comments as well as several other Wilder interviews.
