The Damned United (2009), screenplay by Peter Morgan, novel by David Peace http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYBj_qAJtRA EXT. TRAINING PITCH - FOLLOWING DAY - (1974) CLOUGH walks out into the drizzle and towards the LEEDS PLAYERS.. CLOUGH (up-beat, clapping hands) All right, gentlemen, gather around, please. The players truculently gather round. CLOUGH watches them, notes their mood, then.. CLOUGH (cont'd) I might as well tell you now. You lot may all be internationals and have won all the domestic honours there are to win under Don Revie, but as far as I'm concerned, the first thing you can do for me is to chuck all your medals and all your caps and all your pots and all your pans into the biggest fucking dustbin you can find because you've never won any of them fairly. You've done it all by bloody cheating. Silence from the PLAYERS.. CLOUGH (cont'd) Mr. William Bremner. You're the captain. And a good one. But you're no good to the team and you're no good to me if you're suspended. I need you fit for every game, and I want good, clean, attractive football from my captain. Setting an example. CLOUGH turns to PETER LORIMER. CLOUGH (cont'd) Mr. Lorimer, I hope you were listening because you're as good a footballer as I've ever seen, but you know how I feel about the way Don let you harangue referees, fall over when you've not been touched, protesting and pointing, trying to get other players booked. We'll have no more of that. CLOUGH turns to JOHNNY GILES.. CLOUGH (cont'd) And you, Irishman. God gave you skill, intelligence, and the best passing ability in the game. What God did not give you was six studs to wrap around another player's knee. GILES I don't know what you're talking about. CLOUGH turns to NORMAN HUNTER... CLOUGH But you do, though, "Bites yer Legs". HUNTER People kick me, I kick them back. CLOUGH Not with me as manager. Do that on my watch, you'll be fined and stuck in the reserves. (to all the PLAYERS) Things are going to be a little different around here. Without Don. Might feel a little strange at first. Might pinch a little. Like a new pair of shoes. But if you want your grandchildren to remember you for being something other than the dirty buggers you all were, if you want to be loved as REAL champions, WORTHY champions, you're going to have to work. And improve. And change. Brian Clough makes a good impression with the players, on his first day as new manager of Leeds United.

Klara shows off her salesgirl skills and earns herself a job in The Shop Around the Corner (1940), screenplay by Samson Raphaelson, based on a play by Miklós László http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4r_bILrFCI Klara: Good morning, Madam. It's a lovely box, isn't it? Customer: Oh, yes. It's a candy box, isn't it? Klara: Yes, Madam, a candy box, and I should say, a very unusual one. May I open it for you? Matuschek: Yes, Madam. That's Ochi Tchornya. It's a very popular classic. Customer: No, that would never do. Where do people get ideas like that? Imagine, every time you take a piece of candy you have to listen to that song. I couldn't buy a thing like that. Too silly. Klara: I know just what you mean, Madam. Yet some customers like it for the very thing you object to. We've sold quite a few. Customer: Really? Klara: Yes, Madam. There's no denying that we all have a weakness for candy. I don't mean to say anything against candy. No, I only mean that sometimes we are inclined to overdo it a little. Customer: I suppose so. Klara: Madam, have you any idea how many pieces of candy you eat a day? Customer: No, I never gave it a thought. Klara: We pick up a piece of candy absent-mindedly and then we take another piece. Before we know it, we've gained a few pounds. That's when our troubles begin. Massages, electric cabinets. Customer: I know it. Klara: Now, this little box makes you candy-conscious. That's what we designed it for. Every time you open it, the little tinkling song is a message to you. "Too much candy, now be careful." Customer: How much is it? Klara: 5.50. It was reduced from 6.95. It's a real bargain. Customer: I'll take it. Klara: Thank you, Madam. Matuschek: What do you say now? Alfred: I think people who like to smoke candy and listen to cigarettes will love it.

From the first episode of A Young Doctor's Notebook with Daniel Radcliffe and Jon Hamm. (This is a short series currently streaming on netflix and while it's not a movie, it's definitely movie quality.) Anna: I'm sorry the doctor isn't here yet. But Feldsher can help you if it's nothing too complicated. Young Doctor: No, no, no, I'm, I'm the doctor. I’m the doctor. I am the doctor. Anna: Forgive me it's just that our old doctor had a beard. Old as in the one before you. Leopold Leopoldovic. Young Doctor: Oh. He's quite a..well, no, I mean sorry. I shaved last week. I mean yesterday. Anna: No wonder you're cold. What kind of coat do you call this? Young Doctor: I don't know. Feldsher: Forgive me Doctor. Glad to have you here. Really very glad to have you here. So glad. But Moscow. Ah! Dear, dear Moscow, you must tell me everything. Young Doctor: Oh, yes so you know Moscow? Feldsher: No. You must tell me everything. Anna: Doctor this is Pelageya, our junior midwife. Do not let her distract you. Young Doctor: Oh, no. No, no, I won't. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncxXbJxbI-o Why this dialogue is notable: There is so much subtext to this dialogue. The Young Doctor is a recently graduated medical student who has been forced from Moscow into the country for his first job as a doctor. Everyone is trying to avoid the obvious fact of his extreme youth, and even the Young Doctor is trying to convince himself that he's ready to be a doctor. I should note that the scene (and the Young Doctor's first day on the job) continues beyond this short clip and gets even better. As the Young Doctor is being given a tour of the hospital, his older self joins in the orientation, noting such things as the water tap that's lethally hot and foreshadowing events to come (commenting on the dull bone saw and calling the dispensary a "sweet shop"). The way the Young and Old Doctor interact together in this scene is nothing short of brilliant.

Suggestion for a theme if you haven't already done it: awkward talks with parents - the sex talk, the drug talk, etc
