This has been my idea gathering approach for years. One script I recently had optioned was inspired by a murder more than a decade ago. The husband killed his pregnant wife because she was smoking meth and that was bad for the baby. I held on to that conflict of idea and action for years before I wrote the script, but even as the years passed, I never forgot what the husband did and why -- which became a major theme for the script. And that's really the only thing from that real event that's in the script. Ideas are everywhere -- it's just a matter of seeing them and figuring out what they can be for a story, character, theme, etc. Even the script I'm working on now sprung from a real incident, but I'm not even including the incident in the script. It just provided the springboard to create the story I wanted to tell.
