I've found that driving does the same thing for me. I have my best ideas while I'm driving in the car, unfortunately I also cannot write while I'm driving. So to remedy that I downloaded an App on my phone where I can dictate to my phone & although it doesn't always get everything I say correct, I've at least got the idea down and can come back to it and flesh it out later.

A few years ago one of my writing coaches introduced me to the technique of sitting down somewhere and simply writing about exactly what was in front of me. I'd never heard of it before, and although I've only done it a few times, I can certainly corroborate this theory from my experience. It's like word therapy. You don't really think, you just sit down and talk and let the words flow right out of you. After a while you're brain and fingers become one. I totally agree about the running thing too. I'm such a big believer of exercise in general. For me, it's all about getting my body in tuned with my mind. I have one of those obsessive brains that never stops moving, so getting my body and mind on the same page (moving really fast together) does wonders for my mental clarity.
