A few years ago one of my writing coaches introduced me to the technique of sitting down somewhere and simply writing about exactly what was in front of me. I'd never heard of it before, and although I've only done it a few times, I can certainly corroborate this theory from my experience. It's like word therapy. You don't really think, you just sit down and talk and let the words flow right out of you. After a while you're brain and fingers become one.
I totally agree about the running thing too. I'm such a big believer of exercise in general. For me, it's all about getting my body in tuned with my mind. I have one of those obsessive brains that never stops moving, so getting my body and mind on the same page (moving really fast together) does wonders for my mental clarity.
