What is independent storytelling? Is it not following the three act structure?is the paradigm the three act structure?

I'm wondering about Memento. And I don't think that if you look at it played in sequence you'll see the three act structure, because the whole point is that it's not played in sequence. Perhaps, like with Pulp Fiction, breaking away from the three act structure is rooted in breaking away from sequential or chronological story. But it's also true that you can find three act structures within these films if you deconstruct them. And then there's David Lynch with Mulholland Drive and Inland Empire.
