Crazy. I was just listening to "The Pretender" today and thinking about how Jackson Browne is one of the only artists who I think of more as a writer than a musician. Almost every one of his songs has a line or two that only a real writer could come up with. Morrissey is one of my other favorites -- and I saw him live on Saturday. I think he's one of the funniest writers of any form I've ever heard. He's truly a master of sarcasm.

I saw Jackson Browne on "The Pretender" tour. Such a strong album - from concept to individual songs to overall themes. Jackson studied poetry when he was young. In fact, urban legend is that Phoebe Snow was writing about Browne in her song "Poetry Man".

Yeah, this guy kinda owns me. He emerged right when I was falling in love with the love of my life, so early on his "Looking Into You" was helping all of that along. We've been married going on 35+ years now, but "The Pretender" almost derailed the main event. He painted a picture that was so devastating and haunting; I felt like I was about to step right into that house by the freeway... But thank God for Annie's killer green eyes, and the fact she was (and still is) a dancer. Both got me steppin' down the aisle. And so through it all, the arc of "For A Dancer" -- especially the third act of the song -- has always put it at the top of my list of favorites. And it's a long list, 'cuz he's just that astonishing, as a poet-songwriter.
