Okay, DSI, that is a really dumb idea. Or is it? Throw Jennifer Connelly into the mix... Career Opportunities.

Suppose our protagonist (obviously a miner) gets trapped underground with all of his co-workers dead and as he struggles to get out of it, he comes to find out that he isn’t alone but there are 10 other miners who had trapped in previous years. The twist is when they tell him that the mine eats up one person every 7 years span and there is no way they could get out as long as the mine keeps them. The mine is taking revenge. The long time excavation (which is now abandoned) took away more than 13 dinosaur skeletons, the mine, they think had loved. Now it’s a situation of wait and see. 2 more miners to be eaten up before it make 13 of total trapped miners ( 14 more years) and then they could hope that the mine would spit them out. Will it be so? I think that I’m exaggerating. Or is there a story in it?

hammad, so the mine itself is the Nemesis. Has a kind of Poltergeist feel to it where the physical entity (house / mine) has a 'mind' of its own. The mine could shapeshift tunnels, cause rock slides, send out hundreds of rats from its crevices, create a flood from an internal underground stream, send bats scurrying airborne, walls close in. The 33 meets Poltergeist. Interesting...

The earthquake traps a few miners who consider themselves lucky to be alive, but when the emergency store begins to run low and it looks like no rescue from the surface will come (where all experts agree there could have been no survivors), they figure it's up to them to dig their own way out. Near the limits of their endurance they break through to another tunnel just as their old sanctuary collapses. But now the danger isn't collapse--it's water, way too much of it. They escape drowning just in time to find another cave and face--a lava flow. With their numbers dwindling, they escape the lava flow only find find themselves amidst the largest uranium deposit ever found. Radiation! It's The Mines of Moria meets Cube. http://youtu.be/MY5PkidV1cM

Because we already had a kind of serious underground story this month, I feel like maybe this would lend itself to a sort of modern folk tale, the guy's been underground for 17 years... maybe he likes it. Maybe he moved down there to get away from society and all that bullhockey, now he's a huge celebrity, the biggest star in this weird little town that the hole was dug in.

I like it. Increasing tension with each successive level of danger.

There you go. Maybe he is the poster child for cutting the cord in terms social media and all forms of technology. Maybe he's happy in his own simple way. A breath of fresh air. Hipsters start to emulate him by getting rid of all their iShit. He's Chauncey Gardener from Being There!

I was originally imagining Robert Duvall as the dude in a sort of Roald Dahl styled world, now you got me thinking of Nick Offerman: mole man. He just wants to be left alone so he can return to his cave.

After the collapse of the mine Mr.cheung discovers another tunnel leading to the discovery of a secret tresure left behind by the Vikings. Mr.cheung now has all the gold an riches a man could ever want, now just has to figure a way out. After many year's spent there Mr.cheung starts to try to piece together mysterious books left by the Vikings. He soon realizes that a curse might be what's keeping him there.

Kind of The Mummy angle: Discover treasure ---> Curse. Lots of ways to go with a mine cave-in story.
