Some of the DVD editions of "Seven" had some marvellous extra features (like most Fincher films) including commentary from Andrew Kevin Walker. One of the most impressive moments for me was Somerset and Mills' unwitting arrival at John Doe's front door. There were so many ways this could have been done but Fincher does it perfectly - I remember being fairly shocked the first time I saw the sequence as it was so well executed. The scene is shot and edited superbly, but if you look at the script it's all there already. One of the best things about the script is the unusual way the Nemesis is presented, or not presented much of the time, but that's probably worth a blog post of its own from Scott....

Your comments make me want to see the movie again, it's been such a long time. Per your last point: John Doe doesn't make an actual appearance until quite late, as I recall. The murders themselves serve as his presence in his 'absence'. We learn about his personality - or at least conjecture about it - through the clues of the crime scenes. Great script, great movie.
