When I read your set up Scott I see or should that be hear different view points. Rifting off When Harry met Sally maybe we should have different perspectives or voices on the break up phases. My brain demands a 'Henry VIII' type side kick with his six phases 1. Find a new pretty girlfriend phase, 2. Get thee to a nunnery phase, 3. Try to get a divorce but fail phase, 4. Off with her head phase, 5. Screw it all, her family, the church and start a new religion phase, 6. Repeat 1-5 phase. Let your mind run free.

That's not dumb. You're losing it man.

Add the 'now I'm going to kill that mother' phase and you break out of the romcom drudge into the dark reality. Add this idea to your dual protagonists (good twist BTW) and you have a crime thriller with two people out to kill each other. I see the ending as a spin on Romeo and Juliette. They each put one through each others brain. Like War of the Roses perhaps.
