As an un-cynical religious person and a huge fan of Joaquin Phoenix, this movie makes my heart sing and makes me cry every time. I've probably seen it at least 20 times. If you define 'prayer' as a conversation with God, not all those conversations are going to be pleading or deferential. Some of them will be furious. And that's okay too. Merrill's prayer occurs silently and concurrently. He's set up as the most flawed character in the group and the most frightened too - and yet, from the conversation he has in the next scene with Graham, he seems to have the most faith. Love love love this movie.
