I think the Protagonist in his novel certainly helped lead David into the story. But judging from his comments re the research he did, all that first-hand experience had to feed the whole process immensely.

sorry i'm just bitter. :) i've been wrestling with character and hearing so much emphasis on it from the pundits that it can be frustrating.
