absolutely. it's amazing how many scripts are made difficult to read because of the logical inconsistencies in the simple telling of the story. characters say things that either don't flow in the conversation or make sense at all. screen direction is confusing. all of which contributes to a disjointed and frustrating read, even if the story might be compelling.

DC Mar sounds sexy...

DC's responces sound like someone just doing a job. NEVER sensed a passion for finding great stories. DC sounds bias towards big name writers, thus it sounds like she doesn't give new writers a fair shake.

THAT said, I still love her. Love all readers. They don't have an easy job. And it is nice to get a little insight into their world.

Wow! Reading these posts has made me really start thinking about my script and whether I can fulfill all of the things you DC Mar looks for. This is stuff I will definitely be filing away to remember every time I write a screenplay.

I can't agree strongly enough with DC's comments.

I haven't read for as many companies for as long, but my process is pretty similar to hers for the LA-based companies and, here in Australia, for the government finance bodies. Particularly the "last page," and "scan for black," tests. Maybe they sound unfair, but it's a foolprooth way to get a sense of the script and the writer before diving in. (Very important if they're asking you to give a writer's assessment.)

Beyond that, I read a lot of adaptations for one company. And particularly where the property being adapted was well known (graphic novel, animation), the biggest issues were: how well did the writer get the story down and how well did they translate the protag.
