What I've always loved about "Witness" is that every story beat happens visually. You can watch the whole film with the sound off, and never miss a crucial detail. You might not know the relationship between John Book and his sister, but that doesn't fundamentally change or confuse the plot. I love the relative silence of this scene, and also its follow-up where Samuel learns the murder is a cop.
