40's girdle trivia--I've got a book of five Sturges screenplays and in the Sullivan script after she says she could use a new girdle Sturges inserted (protection: stockings). Around the same time, Jack Benny got in trouble with the radio censors for saying 'girdle' in a malaprop for 'griddle'.

John, that's a great bit of trivia re "girdle." Some have argued that the Harris code caused filmmakers to be much craftier / smarter about working in sexual subtext. BTW, here is a fantastic website re Sturges, truly one of America's greatest gifts to cinema.
