George Kennedy’s character ‘Dragline’ to Paul Newman’s 'Luke Jackson’ in the classic picture, COOL HAND LUKE. Dragline’s backward arc of character (progression/regression?) is amazing and easily the finest work he ever did on film. No surprise he got the Best Supporting Golden statue from the Academy that Year.

That's another good point, Kevin. Another value of a bully character type in a script is, if well-written, it becomes a role actors will want to play. And if it's a MEATY enough role, it can be memorable enough to win awards (see also Nurse Ratched in Cuckoo's Nest).

Lou Gosset in "Officer and. Gentleman" is a good bully character. Just rewatched this a week ago. Very dark. He at first is the antagonist, trying to get Gere to quit. Then he becomes the one keeping him in.
