http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SS42yIDQX6s Mail Room Orienter: You punch in at 8:30 every morning, except you punch in at 7:30 following a business holiday, unless it's a Monday, then you punch in at 8 o'clock. Punch in late and they dock you. Incoming articles get a voucher, outgoing articles provide a voucher. Move any article without a voucher and they dock you. Letter size a green voucher, oversize a yellow voucher, parcel size a maroon voucher. Wrong color voucher and they dock you! 6787049A/6. That is your employee number. It will not be repeated! Without your employee number you cannot get your paycheck. Inter-office mail is code 37, intra-office mail 37-3, outside mail is 3-37. Code it wrong and they dock you! This has been your orientation. Is there anything you do not understand, is there anything you understand only partially? If you have not been fully oriented, you must file a complaint with personnel. File a faulty complaint and they dock you! - THE HUDSUCKER PROXY, (written by Joel & Ethan Coen & Sam Raimi) I think we've all had a job orientation like this where they draw the threat of "docking ya'" like a gun! My favorite line is the absurdly vicious "6787049A/6. That is your employee number. It will not be repeated!"

I see that I may have misconstrued "directions" as "instructions" for this week's theme. Apologies if i'm outta' turn here...still...any chance to toss around great Coen dialogue so no regrets! :)

There are several directions scenes in "Wizard of Oz." This is a great dialogue theme, because there's so much to gather from a character based on how they give directions.

Clark: We're from out of town. Man Giving Directions: No shit. National Lampoon's Vacation (written by John Hughes) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwBoa-NbNL8 The great thing I noticed about this scene is what happens to the car. The car is a talisman representing how bad their vacation is. Seeing the missing hubcaps on the car helps the audience remember this scene where they ask for directions in St. Louis. A great example of a smartly written scene which connects to the movie's themes.

Thought of another scene. Lenny: Are you Dick Ritchie? Floyd: Uh, no. Lenny: Do you know a Clarence Worley? Floyd: Yes. Lenny: Do you know where we can find him? Floyd: Yes, I do. Oh. Lenny: Well, where? Floyd: At the Beverly Ambassador. Lenny: Where's that? Floyd: Well, you go--No. Yeah. Go down-- Go down Beach--You guys want to smoke a bowl or-- (Shotgun cocks) Floyd: Oh. Go down Beachwood and drive a while, and then you're gonna turn right, okay? And then you go, and you keep drivin', and you keep drivin'. -True Romance (Written by Quentin Tarantino) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gGZAIFteAg A stoner giving directions to the mob. A brief scene where Floyd cements his trickster archetype. He is Dick and Clarence's ally but this is the second time where he puts his friend's in jeopardy because he tells the bad guys where to go.

MARLIN It's me. DORY All righty, Mr. Smarty Pants. DORY ..orange and small, and white stripes.. MARLIN Me. And the next one's just a guess: me. DORY Okay, that's just scary. MARLIN W-w-wait, I have definitely seen this floating speck before. That means we've passed it before and that means we're going in circles and that means we're not going straight! DORY Hey. Hey! MARLIN We gotta get to the surface, come on! Let's figure it out up there. Let's go! Follow me! Wha--? DORY Whoa, whoa, whoa! Hey! Relax. Take a deep breath. Now, let's ask somebody for directions. MARLIN Oh, fine. Who do you wanna ask, the speck? There's nobody here! DORY Well, there has to be someone. It's the ocean, silly, we're not the only two in here. Let's see...okay, no one there. Uhh, nope. Nada. [gasps] There's somebody. Hey! Excuse-- MARLIN Dory! Dory! Dory! Okay, now it's my turn. I'm thinking of something dark and mysterious. It's a fish we don't know. And if we ask it directions, it could ingest us and spit out our bones! DORY What is it with men and asking for directions? MARLIN Look, I don't wanna play the gender card right now. You wanna play a card? Let's play the 'Let's Not Die' card. DORY You wanna get outta here, don't you? MARLIN Of course, I do. DORY Well then, how are we gonna do that unless we give it a shot and hope for the best? Hmmm? Hmmmm!? Come on, trust me on this. MARLIN All right. DORY Excuse me! Woohoo! Little fella? Hello. Don't be rude, say 'hi'. MARLIN Ha..hello. DORY His son Bingo.. MARLIN Nemo. DORY ..Nemo, was taken to, uh.. MARLIN Sydney. DORY Sydney. Yes. And it's really, really important that we get there as fast as we can. So can you help us out? Come on, little fella. Come on. MARLIN Dory, I'm a little fella. I don't think that's a little fella. DORY Oh. Oh, oh, big fella. Big fe--whale. Okay. Maybe he only speaks whale. MOOOOO-WEEEEEEE-NEEEEED... MARLIN Uh, Dory..what're you doing? DORY TOOOOOOO-FIIIIIIND... MARLIN What're you doing? DORY HIS-SOOOOOOOOOOOON... MARLIN Are you sure you speak whale? DORY CAN-YOOOOOOOUUU-GIIIIIIIIIVE-USSSS-DIRECTIOOOOOOOONS-TOOOOOOOOO... MARLIN Dory! Heaven knows what you're saying! See, he's swimming away. DORY COOOME-BAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK! MARLIN He's not coming back. You offended him. DORY Maybe a different dialect. MOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! MOOOOOAAAAAAAAAA..! MARLIN Dory. Dory, this is not whale. You're speaking like..upset stomach. DORY Maybe I should try humpback. MARLIN No, don't try humpback. DORY WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAOOOOOOO!!! WAAAAAAAAAOOOOOO!!! MARLIN Okay, you actually sound sick. DORY Maybe louder, huh? RAAAH!!! RAAAAH!!! MARLIN Don't do that! DORY Too much orca. Didn't it sound a little orca-ish? MARLIN It doesn't sound orca! It sounds like nothing I've ever heard! DORY MOOOO..MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! MARLIN It's just as well, he might be hungry. DORY Don't worry. Whales don't eat clownfish, they eat krill. KRILL Swim away! DORY Oh, look. Krill.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) Screenplay by: Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens Frodo: Mordor, Gandalf, is it left or right? Gandalf: Left! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=brcI4oF1Kto Dialogue on Dialogue: This scene is only in the extended edition and it's not in the book, but I like how it reinforces our perception of Frodo's bravery in taking on the Ring quest despite his not knowing the way or what obstacles he will face. It's also a nice moment to see Gandalf as trusted friend and mentor, with that twinkle in his eye that Ian McKellen so wonderfully brings to life.

The scene in "The Godfather" where Michael gives directions to Enzo the Baker, in the hospital. It's a transitional scene for Michael because, before learning his father had been shot and almost killed, he's just a guy out on a date in pre-Christmas New York. Then he goes to the hospital to see his father, notices that all of the protective detail is gone and moves his father to safety. Just after that he hears someone coming up the steps and down the corridor, footsteps echoing in the silence. You don't know who it is...it turns out to be Enzo the Baker, who insists on staying to help Michael. Michael gives him directions on what to do...and in the end, is stunned to find his own hands steady, even as Enzo is trembling with fear. The scene is a turning point because after this, Michael leaves civilian life behind. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=IdD8L6WaJ00&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DIdD8L6WaJ00
