I know it's a really mundane/crass point, but over-reliance on 'haiku' style action sequences can play havoc with your page count - all those double spaces... And often that's the first thing a reader looks at.

Very true, Larry. The story would have to be a pretty special one to justify using the 'haiku' style, something like Wall-e as the spare, lean look supported the mood and atmosphere of the little robot on the desolate Earth. Once it moved to the spacecraft, maybe not so much. And frankly I know some readers who HATE this style of writing. But if that is what the story NEEDS for it to be told well, I think you have to follow that path. But make sure you've read Walter Hill, Shane Black, and others who favor this type of staccato style of writing.
