Whether you call them rules, tools, guidelines, principles, expectations, whathaveyou.. I keep them akin to eating bacon (because I love bacon and will use bacon as a metaphor for many a life lesson).
Do it if it feels right to do it, but don't over do it or you may be in trouble.
The general consensus isn't "Never __________________" or "Thou shall not ________________". The real "principle" if anything is "Avoid unnecessary uses of _______________. Use it when it serves the story."
That's my take on it, in any case.
