Okay, I've just written my goals in the front of next year's diary, so here goes… - Write two new feature projects from my ideas pile - get one of the two TV projects under option at the moment into production (not within my power, perhaps, but we'll see how that goes) - get at least one movie idea into development with a producer - and while this might not seem writing-related: move house! I'm planning to move somewhere much more central, which will reduce the time and difficulty of travelling to meetings, and give me less time travelling and more time writing!

I've already stated my five and ten year goals, plus my practical goals. This one is going on a 3 by 5. Best of fortunes, Scott.

Great idea, Scott! I have 6 goals: 1) Finish my high-concept action thriller. 2) Write as many specs as/more specs than I did this year (three). 3) Gain traction on the Black List site with at least one of these scripts. 4) Place higher in the Nicholl than I did this year (made the Quarterfinals). 5) Obtain representation from a manager/agent. 6) Obtain at least one option or sale. I know that the last four are out of my control, but like you said, I'm just trying to engender positive energy. I'll notify you when I've completed all of these, lol... As a side note, thanks for another great year of posts. We're all looking forward to GITS 2014. Have a Happy New Year!!

Obtain representation. As other posters have pointed out, that's out of a writer's control, but taking steps to make it happen isn't. After years of screenwriting and over a dozen scripts, I wrote two in 2013 and the coverage coming back on them is, for the first time in my life, completely and totally awesome. So, right now it's not just about planning for 2014 but celebrating 2013, which was everything it was cracked up to be and then some.

Scott, please write a book about the Theology of Screenwriting. (I'll keep from ending the first sentence with an exclamation point, but it's implied.)

While I'm waiting for the Goodyear Blimp to go out over the Rose Bowl and flash my goals, I figured I'd put my goals out there here too for added insurance. I'll be starting the UCLA Extension Film and TV Comprehensive Certificate Program in about four weeks, and I'm going to start experimenting with having nutty goals, because even if I fall short of them, I'll still get a lot accomplished. So - my goal is to have four screenplays (including the one in the first draft stage now) , one play, and 12 short stories finished by the end of 2014. I look forward to toasting my success at 11:59 PM December 31 2014 if I reach my goal, and getting extra plastered if I don't.

In an effort to focus on the process and not the outcome, here's my plan for 2014: -devote at least 18 hours/wk on WRITING -utilize network (present + new contacts) for script feedback/evaluation -devote at least 4 hours/wk on marketing / research for future marketing -- i.e. for representation, producers, prod co's, writers, deals, etc. -brainstorm daily/weekly and keep filling notebooks with potential new project ideas -seek a mentor relationship with a working screenwriter -read 1-2 screenplays each week "DO THE WORK" -- a suitable mantra for my writing life, training/running/racing life, yes??
