I remember in some old movies (pre-1950's) the credits were "Story by A " "Screenplay by B" "Dialogues by C" Three or more different people were involved in creating the complete script.

In confess I write this way myself. I want to make sure that the action and visuals carry the story--and that final layer of dialogue adds something extra but isn't a structural component.

Hitch could be droll. This approach seems to have worked for him and may be great for others, but I wouldn't agree that dialogue is not or ought not to be a structural component, whenever it's written or by whom.
