I have a very hard time fleshing out my characters in the very first "vomit draft" they always end up like archetypes, but by the end of that draft I usually have a good idea of who I want them to be in the rewrite.

Dylan, I suspect many, if not most writers are like that. As I wrote today, writing is a journey of discovery, so it would shock me if a writer didn't learn more about their characters through the drafting process. Which is to say, you are not alone!
