I think one measure of a great movie is to what degree it acts as a Rorschach blot onto which viewers can project their own interpretations and meanings. By that measure, "Blade Runner" is one of the best. My favorite dialogue is Roys's valedictory: "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die." And there's another clue to Deckard's identity before the unicorn dream: look at the clutter on the piano. Like the replicant Leon, Deckard obsessively collects pictures.

Brilliant post, Nicholas. Blade Runner remains in my top 5 sci fi movies. The soundtrack, the cool visuals, the noirish tone, even Harrison Ford's laconic performance, which to me remains pitch perfect. This movie never gets old.

It's funny, when I think about Blade Runner, I love all the heavy subtext of it. But the first thing that hits me is the digital billboards with the motion picture commercials or whatever they are. They seemed so real to me the first time I saw the film. In this bombed out world of dystopia we see these high tech billboards, waaaay before their time. And the freaky thing now is that we live in that world. You can walk down Sunset Boulevard and see homeless people, while looming in the background are one of those high tech digital billboards. Any minute Harrison Ford is going to show up and blow the brains out of some hot chick.
