Dialogue on Dialogue: Jack and Benny do not run in the same circles: he's the handsome, pampered son of a wealthy doctor, she's the dowdy, overweight daughter of a shopkeeper. But this conversation reveals why Jack is so attracted to her. Guido: "So you were saying the key that always makes you say yes has to come from heaven?" Dora: "Yes." Guido: "I'll give it a try. If the Virgin Mary tosses it down to me... You never know. MARIA, the key!!" (A key is dropped down.) "Is this it?" Later, Guido: "Do you really have to go home? What about the chocolate ice cream? Let's get it right now." Dora: "No, not now." Guido: "Then, when?" Dora: "I don't know." Guido: "Are we going to let heaven decide that too?" Dora: "No, leave Mary alone. Don't bother her over an ice cream." Guido: "No, it's much too important. We can't decide when to have it. I have to ask her. Maria! Send someone to tell us how long before we can have the ice cream." Doctor Lessing: "Seven seconds!" Later still, Dora: "This is my house." Guido: "I've gone by here a thousand times. I've always asked myself who lives here? I wanted to open my store right out front." Dora: "The book shop?" Guido: "Yes, I'll see you every day." Dora: "Then, goodbye. You've been so nice to me. All I want now is a hot bath." Guido: "I forgot to tell you." Dora: "Go ahead." Guido: "You can't imagine how much I feel like making love to you. But I'll never tell anyone, especially not you. They'd have to torture me to make me say it." Dora: "Say what?" Guido: "That I want to make love to you. Not just once, over and over again. But I'll never tell you that. I'd have to be crazy to tell you I'd even make love to you now. Right here, for the rest of my life." Dora: "You'd better run or you'll get wet. It's going to rain again." Guido: "Princess." Dora: "You're all wet." Guido: "My suit is no big deal. It's the hat that bothers me. I need a dry hat, but where can I find one?" Dora: "How did it go? Right, it's easy! Maria, send someone to give my friend a dry hat." It's a long first date scene, but one of my favorites for a couple reasons. First of all, it sets the stage for the tone and theme of the movie. The movie strikes me as an ode to humor, the magic and warmth it can provide even in the darkest time of human history. Here we have their first date, where they take a walk through the city on a cold, gloomy and rainy evening. Despite this, Guido touches Dora's heart with his humor and lighthearted view of the world. Secondly, it also sets the stage for the conveniences Guido takes advantage of in order to provide the illusion of magic in the lives of his loved ones. Finally, who can resist falling in love with this character after his endearing proclamation of love for Dora?

Why do we feel it's necessary to yak about bullshit in order to be comfortable? VINCENT: I don't know. MIA: That's when you know you found somebody special. BUILDER'S YARD. NIGHT. Rain as you've never seen. A pile of huge water pipes in a sprawling builder's yard. Jamal is in one pipe, Salim above him in another. They are both soaked, shivering, but have found some plastic sheet to wrap themselves in. Outside, thirty feet away, stands the girl. Staring. Salim hisses angrily at the girl. SALIM Go away. Ja, ja! The girl might not even have heard. SALIM (CONT'D) She'll have the Security Guard onto us, standing there. JAMAL Not if we let her in. SALIM No. JAMAL She could be the third musketeer. SALIM I am the head of this family, now. And I say no. Piss off, you. Salim huddles down in the pipe. After a while, Jamal follows suit. SALIM We don't even know what the third musketeer's called. 35 EXT. JUHU SLUM. DAY A flash of Jamal's mother being clubbed to the ground. Her scream. 36 INT. BUILDER'S YARD. LATER. Jamal wakes with a jolt and a scream half-swallowed in his mouth. He shuts his eyes tight, trying to force the image out. His breathing slows and he sees the girl staring at him. Salim, too, is staring into nothing. The rain is still falling. The girl goes back to drawing shapes in the mud with her finger. Jamal climbs out of the pipe. Looks at Salim for permission or refusal, but he just continues to stare. So, Jamal walks across to her. She looks up, wary. JAMAL Where's your Mother? Silence. JAMAL Father? The girl shakes her head slightly. Jamal takes the plastic sheet from around his shoulders. Gives it to her. JAMAL (CONT'D) I'm Jamal. He's Salim. LATIKA Latika. Jamal goes back to his water pipe, climbs in. Watches her huddled under the sheet. Sighs, motions for her to join him. She darts across, jumps into the water pipe and huddles up next to Jamal.

"Joe Versus the Volcano" (1990) INT. "THE SPANISH ROSE" RESTAURANT - NIGHT Joe and Dede are sitting at a table, steaming plates of food before them. They are drinking red wine. Joe is caught up in a big idea. Dede is mesmerized. JOE I mean, who am I? That's the real question, isn't it? Who am I? Who are you? What other questions are there? What other questions are there, really? If you want to understand the universe, embrace the universe, the door to the universe is you! DEDE Me? JOE You. Me. DEDE You are really intense. JOE Am I? I guess I am. I was. DEDE What do you mean? JOE I mean, a long time ago. In the beginning. I was full of piss and vinegar. Nothing got me down. I wanted to know! DEDE You wanted to know what? JOE Everything! But then, I had some experiences... I was talking to this guy today, he says I got scared. DEDE Scared of what? JOE Have you ever been scared? DEDE I guess so. Sure. JOE What scared you? DEDE A lot of things. At the moment, you scare me a little bit. JOE Me? DEDE Yeah. Across the room, at another table, three guys with guitars, in raditional Spanish costumes, sing a happy Castilian song. Dede and Joe turn and take in the singers. JOE Why would I scare you? DEDE I don't know. There's something going on with you. This morning you were like a lump and now you're... How do you feel? JOE I feel great. DEDE See? You never feel great. JOE No, I never do. He laughs. DEDE What's funny? JOE I do feel great. And that is very funny! DEDE Where are you? JOE I'm right here. DEDE I wish I was where you are, Joe. JOE (nodding) No, you don't. Did I ever tell you that the first time I saw you, I felt I'd seen you before? She shakes her head. JOE Wait a minute. Joe gets up, goes over to the three guys with guitars, slips them a fin, confers briefly, and returns to the table. DEDE What'd you do? JOE I bribed them to sing a song that would drive us insane and make our hearts swell and burst. Whereupon the three guys with guitars arrive at the table and launch into an extremely passionate Castilian love song. The song makes conversation impossible. Joe pours Dede some more red wine. TRIVIA: The was the first on-screen pairing of Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, who shared considerably more screen time than their next two outings, "Sleepless in Seattle" and "You've Got Mail," both of which had a premise that demanded they be apart for most of the film.
