Great post Scott. Very amusing and a wonderful wake-up call and reminder of what we should be thinking about when writing. I have what might be a daft question. I am not a member of any writer's guild's (yet) and just wondered about this comment: "Writer’s Guild registration number. Amateur." Does this mean the use of a WGA number suggests an amateur? Is this a bad thing....or is this particular person just already at a disadvantage after the title! ;-) Is it just another piece of the jigsaw that tells the reader what sort of writer they are being introduced to, so it is not a bad thing in of itself? I might have misunderstood the sentence completely, but was just wondering....

Hey Mark! The Writer's Guild Registration number is the number you receive when you register/copyright your work through the WGA. You don't have to be a member to do this. The reason why it marks a writer as an amateur is because the assumption is that your work is already copyrighted, so by putting the number up it's like a big sign saying, "Hey don't copy me bro!" when the odds of a reader/prod. co. doing that are slim to none. http://theblackboard.blcklst.com/forums/topic/jeff-willis-says-dont-be-paranoid/ HTH!

Mark, go here to read a lawyer's low opinion of WGA registration. Bottom line: It offers NO legal protection. And that is one of the reasons putting a WGA registration number on a script is perceived as being the sign of an amateur. Another is that no PROFESSIONAL screenwriter does this or feels the NEED to do this. Your best bet: Copyright your script. Then your title page simply script title, written by your name, date, email contact information and that's it.

Thanks for the link Scott...I guess, ultimately, we are better off uploading to the Black List! ;-) I presume there are other benefits to Writer's Guild registration, it is just not something I have really looked into starting out....maybe I will have a look at their web page! Happy Weekend all!
