"There are no rules in film making, only sins, and the cardinal rule is dullness" - Frank Capra Screenwriting is the beginning of film making, and so Capra's observation applies just as ruthlessly. 2001: A Space Odyssey, Pulp Fiction, Fantasia, The Red Violin, et. al. all broke the rules of structure, and all are magnificent. None of the tent pole flops this year broke any rules. But they committed the cardinal sin.

Precisely, Gordon, and thanks for that Capra quote. So true. Even mainstream commercial movies like Saving Mr. Banks break some of the supposed screenwriting 'rules': No flashbacks! No period piece! The Protagonist must be likeable! No passive Protagonists! Kelly Marcel, who wrote SMB, broke each of these 'rules,' more or less, and the screenplay will almost assuredly be nominated for a WGA award and probably an Oscar. That's just one example of many.
