Perhaps an answer to this argument can be expressed as: write something uniquely familiar. Every story has (almost) already been told. The story about a hero or group of heroes saving a princess from a fortress is Star Wars, or Shrek, or X-Men II (children, not a princess). All have the same basic story, but all are unique in their expression. A true unique story is 2001: A Space Odyssey, as is The Red Violin. Both great, both in my top 10. No three act structure or Hero's Journey, both timeless and transcendent. Write your dream. It has already been written (probably), just make sure you do it your way - or else your a cover band.
