I suppose it's a question of semantics, but isn't it possible in the reader's example, that if the lesson the protag needs to learn is to follow their heart, then the more cerebral, head-thinking character isn't actually a mentor, but rather a trickster? Perhaps there's a different character that ACTUALLY would be the mentor, who's true position presents itself later in the film?
