WOW. They spent two years on Blixen's work to write this?? Amazing. Might explain part of the gap between his film Tootsie (1982) and Out of Africa (1985), though Out of Africa definitely had logistics demands domestic films would not have.
I'd just watched
Julie Taymor's 2011 TED talk yesterday, in which she discusses finding a story's core image or theme around which she builds a film or stage production. She makes it look so easy; I'm sure it must be far more difficult, especially when working with translated period material, like Blixen's novels.
A hallmark of genius in painting is the ability to convey in the fewest brushstrokes a complex idea or concept. This particular eulogy wrapped up all the subtlety of Blixen's work in just a couple of lines--true artistic genius, realized fully through the additional genius of actor and director.
