I can't thank you enough for this interview. Like Mr. Hemphill, I find myself needed a timeframe, then I can get rolling on the writing. It was great to hear I'm not alone in that. Also, his comment about just writing scenes - I've had that question myself. That I have numerous scenes that I'd just plain like to write, but am so at the same time stressed by all the stress (yes, intentional there) put on story structure. Why not just dig in a write the parts of the story that are most alive for the writer, capture those, then link later. It'll all need rewrites anyway, but at least I've got the scene that's haunting me down.
And, I was surprised about what he said about the dialogue/characters thing - i've never understood how writers do that, but this kinda made some sense.
