Oh! My absolute favourite spoof of all time: Galaxy Quest (1999) written by David Howard and Robert Gordon! IMDB Logline: The alumni cast of a cult space TV show have to play their roles as the real thing when an alien race needs their help. Starring some of my favourites: Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Tony Shalhoub, and Alan Rickman Great giggles all the way through. Takes a steady hand to craft a good spoof. A definite art to balancing the giggles and still delivering on a solid story - especially if you've got a story-inside-a-story sort of dynamic going on as well. This one is very good at the other thing spoofs have to accomplish, poking fun without insulting the very fans that enjoy the thing being spoofed! Laughing *with* instead of *at* is what makes a great spoof really work!

I love the spoof genre, even though it's been mudled down the past couple of years. I'm actually really excited to read Craig's interview. I listen to ScriptNotes every week and hope he dedicates a whole episode to spoofs. Scary Movie 3 is actually my favorite form the series. For all spoofs, I think that Loaded Weapon I (from National Lampoon) is often ignored. That is a great spoof of the buddy comedy and has some truly hilarious moments including the grocery store shootout scene. Have you ever seen that one, Scott?

If you love Galaxy Quest, you should check out the week long analysis we did on it awhile back which you can access here including the transcript of a live Tweet-Cast with several screenwriters and others commenting as we watched the movie at the same time around the world.

Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid not only spoofed 30's/40's Bogart movies, but innovated by intermixing scenes from classic movies, against which Steve Martin would interact (and when this was copied (stolen??) it led to a series of classic beer commercials).
