To me, MAN OF STEEL was a big let down in terms of story concept. I haven't read the script yet, but I will make up for it soon. Maybe someone can explain this to me. All Kryptonians are manufactured genetically and brought to life in birthing chambers, for them to fulfill a very specific role in society. The implication is that you don't have a choice what to do with your life, it is already pre-determined. So far, so good. Now Jor-El wants to break that cycle. He fathers Kal-El and even has his wife give birth to him in a natural way. He's doing this so Kal-El may be able to choose his own path in life. So far, so good. It's an interesting philosophical concept and done in an intruiging way. I like that it makes Clark become a drifter later on who doesn't know at all what to do in his life. He has to create his own identity. But now comes the critical mistake in the story for me. Foreseeing the distruction of Krypton, Jor-El sends Kal-El to another planet. There he will become a God on Earth, literally their religious savior who will deliver the normal people from evil and show them the light. Jor-El's "spirit" hologram even gives him a Kryptionian undergarment with the symbol for hope on the chest plate, so he can fulfill that role in society. Isn't that contradicting everything they set up before? This was a great opportunity for Clark to create the idea of Superman on his own, including the suit. They could have set themselves apart from the old Donner movies in this regard. Because, let's be honest, this has been yet another remake of Superman the movie, Superman II and Superman Returns, jumbled into one. There are a lot of other plot holes and there's also somtimes a lack of character motivation, but I don't know how much has been cut from the script. I'll save that for some other time :D
