Thanks for another good post, Jason. It's such a good film. In the US the name Guido has become a derogatory term for Italian-Americans with particular traits, but the word can be translated as "guide." And what an appropriate character name that is.

Although I haven't read the script and haven't seen the film in years, I'd like to add an insight/perspective that I wouldn't have had when i did first watch "Life is Beautiful.' And it may have been discussed elsewhere, I dunno. Looked at (now) as a religious Jew, rather than a secular one, we have a mitzvah (commandment) to be b'simcha (joyful) at all times. Hard? Yep, that's why it's a well-earned and meaningful mitzvah. As such, beneath the plot, I see a message of 'emunah' (faith) that regardless of the immediate outcome (Guido's death) unyielding faith, particularly when it's so challenging, is a very Jewish theme. It's just that these days, the audience isn't so interested in hearing a story with outright religious themes, so much, partly because it will just come off as proselytizing when it's not meant to be, at all.
