Yes! I love stupid funny movies, especially on the BIG screen. See ya. There's a pizza and a movie with my name on it.

This was a funny movie, indeed. But Scott, what does it say that this was a vision of the Christian apocalypse written and directed by Jews?
Sarah Grimes at 2013-06-18 20:55:26:
I totally agree with you, Scott! This was definitely the funniest movie I've seen in quite some time; I actually made the same comment to someone yesterday that it was the funniest movie I've seen since Bridesmaids came out. I will say, though, for a comedy, I got genuinely scared by a few scenes! I even got so startled by one particular scene that I screamed out loud! LOL It was a strange feeling especially when 2 seconds prior I was hysterical laughing, but I completely enjoyed it! I've been telling everyone I know to go see it, and I certainly intend to go again!

Amen to more original films. Stupid funny isn't my thing.

I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of the relationships and emphasis on character growth. Nothing like a drama, but a perfect balance for a "dumb" comedy. I think viewers are starting to expect a bit more from comedies. Mel Brooks' films probably wouldn't be as well received today.

Salvation, yeah, but how is it achieved? And if heaven is everything you want, then the friends you love best, even though they were damned (but didn't side with the devil), are there. I thought the boy band at the end reinforced how stuck these guys were in adolescence. I was very surprised at how self-aware this film was of Hollywood, their brand of humor, their celebrity, and what really matters when we face judgement (our own or the Big One). It was also hilarious, even if there were a few screams along the way. Really fun movie, but definitely one you've got to see with someone who shares your sense of humor or enjoys enduring what they find unpleasant for a really good story. Sketch? Seriously?

I think you've just nailed down why Christian-themed films - potentially all religious-themed films, I guess - rarely work. Grace is undramatic. The nature of drama is that the hero takes action, and grace requires us to stop taking action and accept a free gift - the complete opposite of every screenwriting rule ever formulated. Now what I'd really like to see is you digging into the theology of 'the other big movie released this week', because when it comes to peculiar Messianic overtones, that one's a doozy!

As Freud once said: "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar." No religious undertones or subtext here, just two writers using a known trope because it's cool and funny. Move along.
