I had the privilege of reading the Nicholl's finalists, and this story was by far my favorite. What made it stood out was its achievement in getting the reader to identify with the protagonist's goal to the point where you begin to root for him to do something totally evil. That's a tough trick to pull off, very unique...very impressive.
