As long as when I'm on the couch and I have my laptop or a pen and paper, my wife agrees that I'm writing. Just staring into space when I'm trying to break a story or figure out a character -- no, she says, that's doesn't count. So even if I don't use it, I rest my opened laptop on my stomach. It's play-acting, sure, but at least she knows I'm working.
