This is timely as we just reviewed Chinatown for Holly's Black Board script reading club! And I was quite struck by the end of the script and was sure I remembered it being different. So fired up YouTube and, yep, I was right....quite substantially different. While the script ending is a downer, we are left with an image of Cross cradling his daughter in tears, contrary to what we were led to believe their relationship was like. However, in the film, after the panic of Evelyn's death, we see Cross shielding Katherine's eyes and shepherding her away from the car and the scene as if protecting her.....when in fact we know that the cycle is starting again and this monster is about to get away with one of the most heinous crimes imagineable. That is even worse. Chinatown has got the worst of Jake again, and it isn't about to give up it's secrets. This mirrors Jake's assertion to Curly on about page 2 of the script when he points out that Curly isn't rich enough to get away with murder....Cross, on the other hand... While I am in the SMC frame of mind.... ACTION: Protecting Katherine INTENTION: Owning Katherine And, no, I can't imagine Chinatown with a happy ending....
