Scott, how come they had to get clearance for just mentioning Dances with Wolves? I thought you were allowed to mention the names of other movies (otherwise I'm sure all those fan boy conversations would have been unaffordable and so many movies mention characters and other movies all the time). Then I had also read you can't use them disparagingly...but that Smurf conversation in Donnie Darko had to be disparaging! Would appreciate your guidance -- I have a character who is a huge pop culture fan from the 70s, and likes to mention things like Laverne and Shirley and The Godfather (not sure if you remember) and other pop culture references (though we don't show them), so I of course got worried!

Lena, I'm not a lawyer and I don't play one on TV [or online!], but I don't think you need to get any sort of clearance for characters to discuss / talk about films. They are in the public purview. You should check with a lawyer, but again I just don't see how that could be a problem.
