Ghost story. Not a crazy horror one, but not a cheesey live-action Casper one. Or, a story I wrote as a kid called Nick and the Magic Key... sort of a combo of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe & Labyrinth & The Secret Garden.

A family attempts to flip a castle, but when the housing market drops they have to bite the bullet and move in. To make some money back they decide rent it out for events and as a filming location. A company insists on their need to film a ghost story there, but little do they know that the script is actually based off of real events that plagued the castle a century before. Crew members start to go missing, and the family has to band together to get to the bottom of it. "Family Fortress"

Given that the UK has a substantial British-Indian population, let's 'culture-bend' this... A thoroughly Westernised third-generation British-Indian couple are shocked to realise they're inherited a maharajah's palace in the Punjab. Seeing this as the solution to their mortgage arrears and looming unemployment in the UK, they decide to spend six months doing up the palace before selling it to one of India's many millionaires. But its much harder than they though. After many mishaps and setbacks, they fall in love with the castle, the culture, and more in love with each other...

Sounds a lot like Candleshoe (1977) starring a teen-aged Jodie Foster. That movie is a cross between a heist film and a treasure hunt with a well-executed mystery at its core and set on the fictitious British estate of Candleshoe. So, a modern Candleshoe of sorts.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe definitely came to my mind as well.

There you go. Plus you can have some fun with found footage via the film crew.

Debbie, you're thinking globally which is smart nowadays. Not quite your story perhaps, but how about this: It's "The Money Pit" meets "The Best Marigold Hotel."

Daniel, never heard of that one. Here's an IMDB summary: Small time crook Harry Bundage discovers that the old manor house where Lady St. Edmund resides, with three orphans and her butler Priory is the resting place for a hoard of treasure. Unfortunately, he doesn't know where it is. Bundage recruits urchin Casey Brown to dupe Lady St. Edmund into thinking that she is her long-lost granddaughter, so she can search for clues to the location of the treasure. Unbeknownst to Bundage AND her ladyship, Lady St. Edmund is flat broke, and Priory and the children help her ladyship try to keep her home and pride. Joined by Casey, they do all the chores and Priory acts as the butler, gardener, chauffeur and an old major all at the same time! Starred David Niven and a young Jodie Foster.

My first thought is: who is the very worst person to inherit a castle? What if the estranged heir is someone living in an Ashram in India? S/he walked away from the creepy family and their obnoxious money a long time ago. Now they get pulled back to "that life", and are prepared to walk away again, only there are two complicating factors: 1. A bequest in the will provides lifetime housing/employement to the doddering old servants. 2. There's a massive tax bill due on a ticking clock. Do you throw the elderly staff out on their ears in order to rid yourself of material possessions? Do you re-engage with the world again in a desperate attempt to come up with the money and keep the family promise to take care of the staff? Do you find a third way? I see it as a light comedy with emotional beats similar to After the Wedding.

I'd watch that. Sorta made me think of something like Under the Tuscan Sun where someone's traveling around and just buys an old decrepit castle out of the blue... but there's some kind of catch. Could turn scary or could end up a poignant drama/romance. Oooh, like a Beauty and the Beast kind of thing.
