A great set of notes for aspiring writers. The point about writing scripts focused at the financiers is very apt. Also, the point of coming up with ideas which are commercially attractive is one which all writers, including myself, should never forget. I say this because I had the great news my script sold this week (see Scoggins report) -- then spoke to my manager about writing a passion project. He brought me firmly back down to earth. The passion project can wait, the four quadrant, sequel-friendly project shouldn't. So that's what I'm writing. As well as a bit of self publicity, I just wanted to offer hope to all aspiring writers out there to keep reading, writing and watching films -- especially in the genre you are writing. I knew no one in the industry until a few years ago. I just kept sending my scripts out until I broke down the right wall. And it only took me 10 years to have my first taste of overnight success.
