Comedies are still popular, but there has been a drop in sales and movies produced in that genre. The shift is almost entirely due to the continued internationalization of the marketplace and conventional wisdom in Hollywood, largely supported by the facts, is that comedies don't travel overseas as well as other genres. Why? Because action, thrillers and the like are by and large more visual in nature, while comedies may rely more on dialogue which may not translate as well in other cultures, both literally the actual words and more thematically in that something Americans may find funny, international audiences may not. But comedy is still quite important to Hollywood and always will be.
