I think "Smile you son of a bitch!" was definitely the inspiration for many of the one-liners in action movies to come after Jaws. I know that one-liners are used all throughout cinema history (Casablanca, Gone with the Wind), but where did the ironic one-liners commonly used in action movies originate? Is Jaws one of the first?

David, I was thinking the same thing in the context of this post. Is Jaws the progenitor of the Arnold / Stallone / Willis / etc action movie one-liner? "Screw you." / "I'll be back." / "Yippee kay yay m-----f------".

If I had to put money on it, I'd say the Bond movies were the true progenitors of the modern action movie quip. And if you want to go even further back, Bogart got off a few good ones in his day. "So many guns, so few brains!"
