Have you seen After the Wedding / Efter brylluppet (2006) (written by Anders Thomas Jensen, based on a story by Susanne Bier)? It's an outstanding film and the opening does a brilliant job of establishing the story world and burying the exposition. The story opens with the manager of an orphanage in India (Mads Mikkelsen) debating with his colleague what to do about an “invitation” (more of a royal summons) to visit a billionaire in Cophenhagen who may or may not donate the money the orphanage desperately needs to stay open (the conflict being that it will be hard to manage the place in his absence). This could have been a talking heads scene, and in many films we would have had a 5-10 minute set up of the manager “regular routine” before it was disrupted by the inciting incident of the invitation. Instead, in this version, the invitation has already been received before the movie starts, and the conversation between the manager and assistant is intercut with shots of life in the orphanage. The emotional impact of the images and the stunning cinematography completely overwhelm the exposition aspect of the scene. The whole opening takes about 5 minutes of interesting visual storytelling, and then jumps into the consequences of the decision they arrive at and the story proper. It's a great example of a powerful and effective film opening.
