I learned just how desperately my protagonist wants the approval of his mother (and that I need to pay attention to that in rewrites). I also discovered that my protagonist is a carbon copy of the mother who despises him, although neither of them can see that, and the crackling, masked hostility they bring to their scenes is a fantastic and reliable comedy driver.
