Only, it seems, if the female character is pubescent. We still don't seem to be getting actual adult women as leads... (Are adult women threatening, where teenage girls aren't? Is this a spillover from the Final Girl model in horror? I don't know...)

I'd give more props to Underworld (Beckinsale) & Resident Evil (Jovovich) those two series gave way to Twilight and Hunger Games having female lead action heroes. Collectively both of Beckinsale & Jovovich's film series have made roughly $1.25 BILLION.

To answer the screenwriting question. I have been kicking around an idea for a while with a female lead, simply because as you said "male superhero dynamic" is getting played out. And I also enjoyed watching women in films with lead roles such as "Underworld" and "Colombiana" , so now I want to try my hand at it.

Not only does Twilight have a female lead, but women like it because the men are 'pretty'. The next step would be a strong female lead. Women need physically strong role models. If you search Google images for a phrase like "warrior girl" all you get is male fantasy images. Women need to be a different kind of strong than strong but 'sexy'. It negates your strength if you allow yourself to be objectified.
