I want to say that fred and dodd are pretty much the same character on two opposite spectrums. slave and the master. one obviously flawed and open to it, also open to being fixed, the other hiding his flaws and striving to destroy them, but neither able to achieve their goals still controlled by their human nature, their desire. I think they complete each other fill in the gaps the other lacks and that is why they bond so well. the movie in whole I think is a picture to a problem with no answers. it shows in a way the desperate attempts to try and change what are basic nature is. And this is where theology really should come in. to which I see now theological explanation given your previously stated credits. The characters themselves give little to no theological discussion. the movie showcases our human tendencies to fail morally and spiritually, though none of the characters show any remorse for their immorality, They barely question their morality. except for dodd and the 'cause' which find fred to be morally corrupt, judging his behavior, which in itself is wrong. And thats why fred declines to being the slave anymore, because he realized that dodd was a fake, that he was no more then what he was. He had no answers he was a hypocrite. So fred really had no other choice but to go back to where he started. Which leads to another theological point and that is trust not in man but in God alone. also this is a flawed analysis altogether since your not incorporating all dialogue (some things said that I thought more important that you skimmed over). you also missed the connection with fred that he just didnt give a shit about other people the cinematic scenes of fred just kind of being alone in a party, his daydreaming all the girls to be naked. Im not trying to out do you im just saying it could have been better. and I dont think it was a happy ending. It just didn't answer a question it put forth. thus going straight back to where the movie began. a loop per-say, a picture to a problem. Though in the end its bad theology in a whole because it leaves out free will to say we have no control over our desire, or maybe the hope of understanding our desire, in affects to be able to will good in our desire.
