Framing device: A grown-up Fred Savage reads this new book to his 9yo DAUGHTER, who complains there isn't enough romance...or vampires. Or conversely, she's concerned that a female character named "Buttercup" is sexist and that a woman kicking butt does not automatically make her a "strong female role model."

Inigo Montoya discovers that his brother... is still alive. But he's in grave danger, so he enlists the gang to help track him and save him.

When we last saw our heroes... Inigo Montoya: Is very strange. I have been in the revenge business so long, now that it's over, I don't know what to do with the rest of my life. Westley: Have you ever considered piracy? You'd make a wonderful Dread Pirate Roberts. It's time for the muy successful Dread Pirate Inigo-Roberts to retire. Three thrill seeking candidates vie for the job, Westley Jr, Prince Humperdink Jr, and Fezzik's non-giant daughter, Felina. A quest is given, an adventure begins, the stakes are high--too high. Inigo scrambles to find the parents and unite them in a desperate search and rescue.

Start with the successful Inigo Roberts after another successful haul - his pirating career has clearly been good to him. He returns to his castle and is slain by a shadowy figure - he's the ghost of the True Dread Pirate Roberts, and he's taking out those who have taken the mantle. (At least that who he says he is and what he says he's doing. The reveal would be that it's not a ghost AT ALL.) Westley hears the news from Inigo's son, and he is simultaneously worried that he might be next, and empowered to get back into Pirating Shape to fight back. I don't really know what happens from there, but as long as Cary Elwes was being charming and sarcastic, I'd enjoy the ride. Also, zxcvb's suggestion to include adult Fred Savage reading to his kid is absolutely correct no matter the direction the story goes.

The book actually had a part of the sequel storyline already written...

I wouldn't. If Goldman can't figure it out, I don't fancy my chances.

I thought the same thing almost word for word. Goldman can't figure it out, because that Universe is finished. The story has been told. Returning to those characters would only cheapen the original.

Hmmm, I wonder what it could be like. There are so many directions it could go. I liked all the ideas but especially the Fred Savage frame story. Just be sure to include vampires. Generally though, it would need to expand the storyworld somehow and most of these suggestions don't really do that. They primarily use the existing material. We need some new characters to meet as well as a new quest. BTW, who is the protagonist of the original? Buttercup or Westley? I'd argue Westley because he changes from farmboy to pirate. Then again Inigo and Westley both defeat their respective antagonists. Finally, the original TPB was primarily a comedic, fantasy adventure with romance and revenge sub-plots. That's why it is beloved. I don't see most of these suggestions going strongly enough in that direction.
